How is our process so far?
The research is still going on of all the group members and Chynthia is trying to organize a website. We also had our group meeting with Brenna today which went well. We have to meet outside of class one or two time to get some things organized but we are still in track.

Group update 2
How is the group doing so far?
Each of the group members has his own part. Tasia is in charge of the main problems since she really knows most of the background. Walter, Fahad, and I am searching also for background information so we that we have some data and can make a statistic. Cynthia is trying to workout how we can get all our data on a website. We choose the website because its not easy to find any information about our problem. So that people can get some information.

The work is going good so far. We decided on a topic what approach we are going to take and split up the work to different group members. So far we are on a good schedule and should be done at the 9th of July.

Fecundity by Annie Dillard
Write very specifically about something in your home place with the same attention and detail that Dillard does.
My hometown is located in the Black forest and its all sounded by a lot of treas and nice nature. We have thousand miles of trails and high maintains. However we have a lot of wild animals too.
A lot of people get into accidents with wild animals which threaten the existence of some animals.
Also a major problem is the dumping waste in the forest. In general we have to pay for all our waste. Thats because the government wants to reduce the pollution to dispose the wast but also to make money. So people started just dumping their trash into the forest even though it is not a lot of money. This problem is getting more and more of a problem and there is not much to do about it. Even thought the fine is really hight people rather take the risk then just to pay the regular price.

Manifesto and The Making of a Marginal Farm by Wendell Berry
What is his intent with each piece?
I think the poem has more the intense to give a message about what to do to have a good life. What to do to have not much trouble and stay out of trouble. I especially like the part "Love the word. Work for nothing." this gives a relaxing feeling and also sense of freedom. But the I also like that this piece is pushing forward with every single sentence.
Other then the text. This just tells more of a story and not as much of a message. Its more about how he is living his life on his farm and what experienced. Its not as specific as the poem.
Both pieces are connected trough and want to give the message of how great the life can be you just need to find your way to make it happy and easy.

Having Faith by Sandra Steingraber
What is her purpose/audience in writing this? How does she get her message across? Would you consider this writing-as-activism? Why or why not?
Her purpose is to inform all kind of people about the danger of processed food. Specially women who are pregnant.
She is using research material from all over and has a lot of evidence material.
I would consider this as a writing -as- activism because she wants to change people of even the food companies so that all the food is going to be healthier and better quality so that a big change.

What am I doing to make a change
Changes I am trying to do are really little but I also think people need to start somewhere to make a difference.
I am trying to use as little resources as I can. I always tried to save as much as I can and never tried to waste something.
I am biking as much as I can because of the pollution but also of the fact that gas is limited.
I am turning all the lights in my house off if I don't need them.
I turned the ac in my house warmer to save energy too.
Every time I am leaving my room I am turning of my PC.
I am trying to shower as quick as possible to save water.
Back at home we don't even have or need air conditioning which saves a lot of energy and its not necessary anyway.

Personal mission statement
I am standing for doing the right things as much as possible.
Its really hard most of the times to stick and stay to his personal missions or goals but you should never forget and believe in it.
I am standing for being honest, treat other people as I wanted be treated, and trying to save the environment as much as possible.
I alway biked to class my whole life long and I still biked as much even after I bought a car. Why? First of I was always to cheap to by gas but also because I knew its not good for the environmental.
I am trying to eat less meat because I dont think it is necessary to have meat every day anyway.
I am standing for the right of all human and I dont thing anyone should be treated badly.
I think if everyone can just do a little change the world can be much better.

Sociology and Social Change
Write a personal response on your blog (as opposed to a critical response).
This paper really made me think again how I should actually think and go on things. All the facts are really shocking in the beginning and also make the paper really interesting to begin with.
Each lesson makes me think more about what I could change and people around me as well. and that I should start somewhere rather then just wait and see.
On the other hand there are some thing which are too far and are not that easy to realize yet. People can start to make a change but step by step and no complitly right away

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson

A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf by John Muir
Break the piece down in section by section. How does each piece act as a "building block"?
I would separate the piece into two parts. The first part is written in an angry tone and doesn't have anything friendly in it. He is just talking bad about all the thing that happened to people and him with alligators and doesn't have any reason for them to be alive. he even compares them to the devil and that "many good people believe that".
The second part is different but still with a dominant tone. Specially the beginning when he says "The world, we are told, was made especially for man-a presumption not supported by all the facts." But overall the way he writes this part is much more friendly and gives a better understanding the the first one.

What are the major themes in this piece? Are there any minor themes as well?
The minor theme is that he wants to get attention from all kind of people who want to help to stopping the the road building true the national parks.
The minor themes lead to the major theme. The whole piece is building up on emotions pathos. He is talking about all the details from his daily life to people who life there and to the things he likes and hates at the park he works.
All that gives a great connection to the park and more people are likely to help.
One thing that doesn't make sense it when he is talking how easy he has it and that he has so much time to watch the nature and can make himself a drink every once in a while. But then he complains about the lazy park rangers who dont do that they are supposed to do and they don't know what they are doing.

A First American Views His Land
Reading Like a Writer: Does any particular image run throughout the essay?
The whole essay follows the same pattern all the way true. The writer N. Scott Momaday includes translated poems from native Americans in his piece. He talks about the main story, then has as a short introduction of the poem. He is going to write about the poem itself and then also about the poem it self. The poems don't have a great meaning and his description of the American nature is good but could be much better. I can tell that he tried to give a strong feeling of the tradition but I don't really get that feeling.
Personally the whole piece wasn't very easy to read for me and the poems didn't touch me really deep maybe because the translation wasn't the best. I guess the original poems have much more meaning because I think the native American culture has a really strong background. But I also know that this is not easy to do but can be done.

Thoreau/McCandless
I can see a lot of similarities in moth stories. Both like to go into the nature and leave their normal life behind. Both like to spend hours accomplishing their goal and love to be proud of their work. Thoreau and McCandless are both putting a lot of effort in their work and plan everything in every single detail.
The difference between those two characters is that Thoreau is not completely escaping from the society and is going back to his normal life. Other then McCandless. He is starting a new life. In the end he lives without people and doesn't want to have have people around him. Specially in the end when he is not even going back when he runs out of food and should get help.

Blood Dazzler by Patricia Smith (second half)
Choose one of Smith's poems--one that stood out to you--and write an imitation poem based on one of your own experiences within a specific environment or place.
I chose the BACK HOME poem (page 65) because its the one that stood out to me the most.
And thats the my interpretation poem to it.
The upper floors (attic)
I opened the door. Dust all over.
All over the old table, the broken chairs
and even on the little windows.
In the darker parts are some mousetraps.
But nothing is in them probably because we got a cat some month ago.
I am looking for and old book that I but in a box but there are so many boxes.
Which one was it again?
Oh maybe the really dust one in the way back.
I think sometimes that I should just spend a Saturday afternoon
and clean the whole attic.

I chose the poem that we discussed in class. Won`t be but a Minute (Page 10)
The fist paragraph is about how the owners of the a dog talk about how they going to leave him at the house during the storm. The think its not going to be a bad storm anyway and they just can come back after and get him. The just want to leave him some food and some water. They make it seem like its not going to be a "big deal". But they also know that they cant take the dog with them anyway.
The second paragraph is about how how the neighbour can watch the dog while the owners are gone. and one of the most important parts in that poem is:
"You heard the man-he said Go- and you know white folks don't warn us 'bout nothing unless they are scared too."
This part changes the whole poem. Specially with that racist tone. But also the whole language is with an southern accent which makes this poem so different to a "normal" poem. I like here still a lot. I makes it much more interesting to read.

I went to San Francisco (SF) last Christmas break and I was really impressed from the city. The middle of the city looks really nice. I think the older part of the city with the older buildings are the best part. But also the tall business and bank buildings are impressive and give the city a great skyline.

Flying back to Germany last summer was a great feeling to see my family and friends. When I flew over Germany everything looked so nice and green. But also the ride home from the airport true all the cleans cities and true the mountains made me realized how nice my home really is. Also with all the mountains around my home town.

The summer day
The Summer Day by Mary Oliver made me think a lot.
The major themes in this poem can be interpreted very differently. On the one hand I thing she wants to say that life is short and you never know what happens next. So take every chance you can get.
On the other hand how basic and normal can your life be. That usually everyday is the same.

Terry Tempest Williams
The whole first part, about 3 pages, are really specific informations about the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
A specific part is that she describe how to get to the lake with street directions. As well as the different experiment she did in the school out there. She talk about the really detail things like the sun bears down on the lake an average of about 70 percent of the time. Also that Captain Howard Stransburger's exploration and survey of the Great Salt Lake 1852 that the water level has varied by twenty feet.
She talk about a lot of specific thing through out the whole paper.
