Break the piece down in section by section. How does each piece act as a "building block"?
I would separate the piece into two parts. The first part is written in an angry tone and doesn't have anything friendly in it. He is just talking bad about all the thing that happened to people and him with alligators and doesn't have any reason for them to be alive. he even compares them to the devil and that "many good people believe that".
The second part is different but still with a dominant tone. Specially the beginning when he says "The world, we are told, was made especially for man-a presumption not supported by all the facts." But overall the way he writes this part is much more friendly and gives a better understanding the the first one.

I agree with what Rico has written about because the writer of this did seem very angry about people and animals. At first is angry but also writes how man is dominent towards other species.
